Tom Curran, a versatile player for the Sydney Sixers, will miss four games after getting into a fight with an umpire before to a Big Bash League (BBL) match. This is a major blow for Curran. The Cricket Australia Code of Conduct charges the 28-year-old England international with a “Level 3” offense, which prompted the team to announce the ban on Thursday. Curran’s altercation with the referee happened during a pregame warm-up for the Sixers’ December 11th game in Launceston versus the Hobart Hurricanes.

When Curran finished his practice run-up, he went against the umpire’s orders and raced onto a portion of the pitch. Curran was told not to utilize that section of the pitch, but he went to the other end for one more practice run-up. Curran’s path to the pitch was inadvertently obstructed by the umpire who was positioned next to the stumps. In reply, “Curran was seen on camera motioning for the umpire to step aside… As stated in Cricket Australia’s release, “He then attempted to execute a practice run-up and run at pace straight towards the umpire who stood in the bowling crease facing Curran.”

Luckily, the umpire was able to move aside and prevent a possible collision.

After the English cricketer was banned, 7Cricket released a video of the event. In the video, Curran is seen running around the field before positioning himself to make a bowling run-up toward the field. In spite of the umpire’s efforts to keep Curran from entering the pitch by standing on the side of the stump, Curran dashed in his direction, swerving around him just in time to escape a collision. Not long later, the two got into a fight.

Watch: After Curran’s guilty verdict for the Level 3 offense, Sydney Sixers head coach Rachael Haynes announced the team’s plan to “vigorously appeal” the suspension that had been placed on him. Curran will miss future games against the Adelaide Strikers, Melbourne Stars, Sydney Thunder, and Brisbane Heat due to the punishment, according to Cricket Australia.

After winning their first two league games, the Sixers are now third in the standings. On December 22, they will play Adelaide Strikers again.
