On Thursday at Selhurst Park, Brighton survived a 1-1 draw to deny Crystal Palace their first Premier League victory in seven games thanks to a late equalizer from Danny Welbeck.

In stoppage time of the first half, Jordan Ayew gave the Eagles the lead as Palace took advantage of a sloppy clearing made by Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

But the home team was unable to hold out, and for the seventh straight season, this match finished at Selhurst Park 1-1.

Following a strong start to the campaign, Brighton has only triumphed twice in their past 12 league games due to a long injury list and the club’s first-ever venture into European play.

In addition, the Seagulls have now played 22 straight league games without recording a clean sheet, a club record.

However, the visitors responded when Robert De Zerbi made some adjustments for the second half.

“I believe we dropped two points, but if that’s the case, it’s because we committed too many errors, particularly in the first half,” said De Zerbi.

“In the second half, we played with more energy and had scoring opportunities.”

Welbeck was one of two half-time substitutes sent in, and on 82 minutes, the former England international leveled the score with a beautiful header into the top corner after a cross from Pascal Gross.

Brighton moves up to eighth place in the standings with a point, while Palace jumps nine spots out of the relegation zone to take 15th place.

Even though Roy Hodgson’s team has only won once at home this season, he acknowledged that Brighton deserved at least a point since they dominated the second half.

“It is impossible to dispute Brighton’s caliber of play in the second half, and they deserved to win,” said Hodgson.

“I believe we have to settle for one point at the end of the day, considering it’s a derby game.”
