Afghanistan’s Najibullah Zadran sets his IPL goals clear: Get picked by RCB, lift the title with Virat Kohli

Afghanistan’s cricketing history has seen an incredible chapter in the last few months. Their ODI World Cup campaign attracted a lot of attention since they defeated cricketing heavyweights including England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands. Afghanistan achieved a historic victory by having the most victories of any team in a World Cup campaign; nevertheless, the squad was also involved in a match that went down in cricket history as one of the most memorable games ever—a contest that was forgettable for Afghanistan. For the Afghan team, the grief from the match against Australia, where Glenn Maxwell’s stunning 201* clinched a remarkable victory in Mumbai, still lingers.

Despite spending most of the historic battle in Afghanistan on the sidelines, Najibullah Zadran was nonetheless an essential senior member of the squad. Zadran was the team’s driving force and a major component in their cohesiveness and resiliency, which characterized their incredible ODI World Cup adventure.

The Afghan sensation is presently representing Morrisville Samp Army in the Abu Dhabi T10 League. In an exclusive interview with Hindustan Times, he discusses the emotional rollercoaster that the Afghan team went through during the World Cup. With candor, Zadran talks about the anxious moments that followed Glenn Maxwell’s shocking performance, which ended Afghanistan’s aspirations of making it to the tournament’s quarterfinals.

He also discusses the crucial choice he made to withdraw himself from the starting lineup after the World Cup’s first two games. With his attention now turned to Twenty20 cricket and the impending World Cup, Zadran goes on to express his hopes for a potent comeback to run-scoring form.

The loss against Australia must still be hurting the team. especially considering that your team was in a position to win the match and maybe advance to the semifinals.

Indeed, we are very injured. We had total control of the contest. It was just going to take one wicket. The level of skill shown by Maxi (Maxwell) was astounding. Something like it has never been seen by me. We had Rashid, Nabi, and everyone else on our bowling team, so he really fought injury and hit a double century. Had we won the match against Australia, we might have easily qualified for the World Cup semi-finals. We really did try everything, to be honest. He hit them when we bowled outside the off-stump. He also struck them when we bowled in the middle. He had the day. He made every hit.

It was all quite depressing, but that’s just the nature of the game. We still have a lot of happiness with the way we perform.

You participated in the first two matches of the tournament against Bangladesh and India, but you left it there. Why did it occur?

To be honest, I wasn’t in shape. In the last series before the World Cup (against Pakistan), I too didn’t perform to my best. I thus went up to the coach and expressed my desire to take a break. Give the young people the chance instead, I urged. Both the team and I benefit more from it. As I assisted the players on the field, I was giving my bench-side knowledge. The fact that our team won games was ultimately what mattered most.

Kohli-Kohli chants were always directed at your teammate Naveen-ul-Haq during the first World Cup games. Was it anything that was discussed in the changing room?

No, no. That was not discussed at all. It’s clear that Virat has a sizable fan base in India. However, Naveen said that the IPL supporters treated him similarly as well. He concentrated entirely on his bowling. The dressing room was empty of talk about it. What transpired during the game remained on the field.

What part do you anticipate yourself playing for Afghanistan now that the emphasis is on T20s?

I’ve begun getting ready for the T20s. I want to regain my former shape. In the previous four games in the Abu Dhabi T10 league, I performed well. First against the UAE, then India in a series. Therefore, I only want to keep up the excellent job. There is wonderful match practice.

Afghanistan batsmen have shown remarkable adaptation to Twenty20 cricket. You blasted six sixes against Bangladesh last year in a match while the other hitters combined for a total of one hit. What procedure do you use to ensure that your power-hitting is performed flawlessly?

For such, range-hitting practice is essential. We explicitly train for limits after net sessions. Since I am a 5-6, I generally get to bat in the last overs. I so often practice range striking. Because there will very certainly be circumstances in which I must score at least 12–14 runs each over in those last few overs. Perhaps even more than that. It’s critical to be ready for that element.

For the last two years, as a team, we have been performing really well. We have already shifted our attention to assembling the strongest lineup possible for the T20 World Cup.

This month marks the next IPL auction. Which team would you like to play for if you could choose?

The IPL is a dream for every player. Likewise, mine is. My goal is to be a player for Bangalore’s Royal Challengers. Hopefully, we win the IPL this time around since Virat Kohli hasn’t won it.

Morrisville Samp Army, your team in the Abu Dhabi T10 League, is doing well so far. How are things getting ready for the last leg?

With the way Samp Army is playing and the combinations we have chosen, we aim to make it to the final and take home the championship. For the first time, I’m playing for the Samp Army, and I immediately feel like I belong. There is strong team cohesion and support from the seniors for the youngsters.

I adore playing in the short formats, therefore I attend T10 every year. Second, the game moves quickly. Attacking from ball one is a must. Every year, T10 expands, and I like competing in this competition.
