PUNE, INDIA — October 12, 2026
— Serigen Mediproducts, a leading deep-tech medical technology pioneer specializing in silk-protein tissue regeneration, today officially announced the commercial launch of Serioss. Developed entirely in India, Serioss represents a breakthrough in global orthopedic care: it is the world’s first silk-protein bone void filler to successfully complete comprehensive clinical trials and secure full regulatory approvals.

Marking a major transition from laboratory innovation to commercial scale, Serigen also inaugurated its new ISO 13485-certified manufacturing facility in Pune. This state-of-the-art infrastructure enables the company to produce its bioengineered silk medical devices locally while meeting stringent international quality and safety standards.

A Decade of Deep-Tech Innovation: From Lab to Market

The technology behind Serioss originated from fundamental biomaterials research led by Dr. Anuya Nisal at the CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory (CSIR-NCL) in Pune. To translate these scientific insights into life-saving medical devices, Serigen Mediproducts was founded in 2015 alongside Dr. Premnath Venugopalan and Dr. Swati Shukla joining in as cofounders.

Serigen’s path from bench top to operating table was nurtured within India's deep-tech startup ecosystem. Incubated at Venture Center, the company received crucial early-stage backing from the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), accelerating its preclinical validation, pilot testing, and regulatory journey.

"Serioss represents a journey that began with fundamental science and has now reached the operating room," noted the co-founders Dr. Anuya Nisal, Dr. Swati Shukla and Dr. Premnath Venugopalan. "What began with exploring the potential of silk proteins at CSIR-NCL has evolved over more than a decade into a clinically validated bone regeneration product. We are proud to bring this technology from an Indian laboratory to patients and surgeons."

Unmatched Clinical Validation and Performance

Serioss was specifically engineered to overcome the mechanical and biological limitations associated with traditional calcium-based and synthetic bone void fillers. The product combines the handling convenience expected by orthopedic surgeons with the natural bio-regenerative properties inherent to silk proteins.

The clinical foundation of Serioss rests on robust long-term human data. Initial proof-of-concept and safety were established through a pilot clinical trial at Sancheti Hospital in Pune, where patients have now completed a rigorous three-year follow-up demonstrating sustained safety and successful bone remodeling.

Building on this success, Serigen completed a pivotal, multicenter clinical trial across premier medical centers in India. In comparative evaluations, Serioss demonstrated superior new bone formation and structural recovery relative to leading global synthetic bone void fillers, establishing silk protein as an elite platform for complex bone reconstruction.

Expanding the Bio-Platform: Leveraging Indigenous Resources

While silk has been prized for centuries as a luxury textile, its unique biopolymer structure makes it an exceptional biomaterial for human tissue repair. India, as the world’s second-largest producer of silkworm silk, provides a rich indigenous bioresource that Serigen translates into high-value medical technology.

Serioss joins a growing pipeline of proprietary bioengineered devices within Serigen’s tissue regeneration portfolio:

  1. 1.SERIDERM®: Serigen’s first commercialized product, an advanced silk-protein wound dressing widely used for healing acute and complex chronic wounds.

  2. 2.SERIMAT®: A soft-tissue composite matrix currently in development to support breast tissue reconstruction following oncological surgeries.

By bridging indigenous natural resources, academic rigor, and advanced clinical testing, Serigen continues to position India as a global leader in biomedical innovation and deep-tech regenerative medicine.
